Words. Words are something that I believe have more power than anyone realizes.
Think about it. Without words we wouldn’t be able to speak. If we were unable to speak we would be unable to converse, build relationships, learn things, teach things, really everything stems back to talking. Well, anything with any amount of depth anyways.
So, if words are so important why is so little emphasis put on them? On average we speak about 10-20,000 words a day. That’s absolutely incredible to me. But, how often do we actually stop and think about these words we’re uttering at all times of the day?
It sounds super cliche’ in retrospect, I mean there have been songs about it, “Words” by Hawk Nelson for example, and I’m sure there are plenty of sayings and quotes alike, but it didn’t all come together for me until recently. Words are the most powerful thing a person can possess.
By doing something that takes less energy than walking across the room we have the power to make someone change their perspective on life, self, anything really. We can cause someone to have more confidence or cause them to question every decision they’ve ever made. They can be beneficial or hurtful. They can show love or hate.
I believe our words are a direct reflection of who we are. Especially in today’s society that is so centered on the internet and social media. I can go to someone’s profile or twitter feed and make an assumption about who that person is simply by looking at the words they’ve typed on a screen.
My point is, words are everything. How are you using yours? Let’s say for every positive word we gave you a point and for every negative word we took one away. At the end of the day where do you stand? Have you made a positive impact? Would society be better that day if you hadn’t contributed at all? Or are you balancing yourself out and making it as if you weren’t even there?
Lately I have been studying Ephesians and this verse really hit home with me, especially considering the thoughts circling my head lately about how important words are…”Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear”–Eph. 4:29
To me that brings it all back to hearing what I’m sure most of us heard as children,” If you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.” I think our parents had a better point than we gave them credit for on that one. Another silly saying from childhood is, “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” As strong as this person was trying to seem I think that is a total lie.
Words are powerful incredible things and I think as soon as we realize that we realize the power we all have whether we know it or not. This power is even greater when you know the love of Christ. Words have amazing power but when paired with a motive that comes from God they’re close to unstoppable.
So, my question for you is what do your words say about you? At the end of every day is your score positive or negative? Where does your motive come from?
“He said to them, “Go into all the world and speak the gospel to all creation.” -Mark 16:15
